Turning an image into a puzzle: free tools to play or print

You have a photo, a work of art or the illustration of an album, and you would like to make a puzzle out of it. Either on the screen, for a ritual at the beginning of the session or a tablet workshop. Or on paper, for a self-contained workshop that students cut and reconstruct themselves.

These are not the same tools, and this is where many lists leave you in focus. Most puzzle generators play online and stop there. Cannot print anything.

In short, here are five free services, ranked according to what you want to do with them.

Turn an image into a puzzle to print

This is the most frequent demand, and paradoxically the least well served. Three tools are really doing well.

Lutin Malin, the most suitable for the class

A free French generator developed for primary school. You upload an image, choose the size of the grid, from 2×2 to 15×15 pieces, and print.

Two details make the difference. First, you adjust the thickness of the cutting lines, which changes everything for kindergarten students who still cut poorly. Then, an option mixes the pieces on the sheet before printing: the student can no longer guess the image until they have cut and sorted everything. This is the kind of detail you think of after doing the activity for the first time.

The point that counts for student photos: the processing is done entirely in your browser. Images do not leave on any server. So you can use a class photo without question. And once the page is loaded, the tool continues to work if the school connection goes down.

The limit to know: they are square pieces, a cut-out grid, not a real cut-out in the shape of a puzzle with the little tabs. For kindergarten or a replenishment workshop, it does not matter. If you want the real puzzle rendering, move on to the next one.

PuzzleGenio, the real cut into pieces

Here you get classic puzzle pieces, with their nested shapes. You upload an image in JPG or PNG format, up to 5 MB, you choose the number of pieces, and you download a PDF ready to print. Without registration.

The service also offers SVG and DXF exports for laser cutting. If your establishment has a fablab or cutting machine, the activity can go much further than an A4 sheet.

Two printing tips given by the site, which avoid wasting a cartridge: print at scale 100 % without "adjusting to the page", which distorts the grid, and use paper of 200 to 300 g rather than ordinary paper, otherwise the pieces fold from the first manipulation.

JigsawMake, to vary the shapes

Same principle, in English. Interest: the outline of the puzzle is not necessarily rectangular. You can take out a round, oval, square or heart-shaped puzzle. Anecdotal in class, except for a Mother’s Day card or a plastic arts project.

Free, without registration and without watermark on the PDF. Allow an image of at least 1500 x 1500 pixels, below the rendering degrades quickly.

Play the puzzle directly online

If the puzzle remains on the screen, on TNI or tablet, two safe values.

Jigsaw Planet

The best known and the simplest. You upload an image, you set the number of coins between 4 and 300, and it is playable immediately. No account required to create or play, but without an account you lose the current game if you do not finish it with a draft.

Its big advantage for the class: each public puzzle can be integrated into a classroom blog or ENT, which avoids sending students to search the site’s public gallery.

Jigidi

The direct alternative. Thousands of puzzles to solve, sorted by theme, keyword and number of pieces. You can also create your own from an image. By registering, you save your progress. It is free of charge, with advertising continuously displayed.

How to make a puzzle with a photo, step by step

The principle is the same everywhere, regardless of the tool.

1. Choose a clear and legible image. Count at least 1280 x 960 pixels, plus if you print. Avoid images with large uniform areas: a blue sky on a third of the photo gives rooms impossible to place.
2. Load it into the tool. None of these five services request installation.
3. Set the number of coins according to age. From 4 to 12 pieces in kindergarten, 20 to 40 in cycle 2, beyond for the older ones. It is better to have a puzzle that is too easy than a student who gives up.
4. Play online, or download the PDF and print. For printing, thick paper and scale 100 %.

Which tool to choose

In summary

For a paper workshop in kindergarten or cycle 2, start with Lutin Malin: French, free, and your images do not leave your computer. For a real cut-out puzzle to offer or display, PuzzleGenio. For a ritual on TNI, Jigsaw Planet remains the fastest to set up.

Nothing revolutionary in any of the five. But 15 minutes of preparation and you have an activity that lasts half an hour, with the image you have chosen rather than that of a ready-made file.
