With Sciences.live, we are removing these barriers: geographical, budgetary or logistical constraints are no longer an obstacle. All classes, from CP to Terminale, can experience a live scientific animation from their classroom, with a mediator who interacts in real time with students.

This model guarantees equal access to scientific culture, regardless of the territory. Beyond rural areas, it also benefits peri-urban and urban institutions that face difficulties in organizing travel or wish to supplement their teaching with flexible and easy-to-implement interventions. Sciences.live thus asserts itself as a service of general interest, designed to offer all students the same opportunities to discover, understand and practice science.

In the age of unlimited digital educational resources (videos, MOOCs, AI), why did you choose live animation by a scientific mediator? What is the pedagogical advantage?

The choice of live animation by a scientific mediator has become the major asset of our system. In many Centres for Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture (CCSTI), human mediation is at the heart of the experience: it makes it possible to explain, accompany and arouse curiosity. We wanted to preserve this privileged relationship with the students, even at a distance.

Unlike static digital resources, a live workshop makes it possible to adapt to class level, students’ reactions and spontaneous questions. The mediator can reformulate, deepen, bounce back on an idea or correct a misunderstanding. It is this interaction that we are looking for with Sciences.live: creating a dynamic of engagement that fosters attention, participation and ownership of scientific notions.

This human dimension makes Sciences.live’s pedagogical value and allows us to offer a high-quality, personalized experience for each class.

The Sciences.live project is supported by several Centers for Scientific, Technical and Industrial Culture (CCSTI). How did you ensure the scientific quality of the content and its alignment with the curricula and pedagogical needs of teachers?

All content is designed to be interactive, immersive and adapted to the level of the students. Mediators work closely with teachers who ensure alignment with school curricula, identify pedagogical needs and support the structuring of workshops. We always make it clear that our animations do not replace a course: they complement, introduce or conclude a chapter, or as a cultural opening.

Each workshop is systematically tested by several partner institutions, from primary to high school. These pilot sessions make it possible to adjust the contents, check their suitability with the levels targeted and ensure that they meet the expectations of the field before their deployment.

© GAUTIER DUFAU

How do the mediators’ platform and methodology manage to maintain a good level of interactivity and engagement with an entire class during the 50 minutes of a remote workshop, avoiding the pitfall of a mere passive conference?

Our workshops capture students’ attention from the start and keep them active throughout the session. Rather than a top-down presentation, they are organised around a common thread that gives rhythm and meaning to the activity: ‘Hello, my name is … and today you will help me save an archaeological site threatened with destruction. Are you ready to help me?" Students regularly participate through quizzes, questions, associations of ideas or small challenges. This dynamic avoids any passivity and maintains their commitment for 50 minutes.

The mediator reacts to the responses and reactions of the class to adapt their live animation. The teacher, for his part, facilitates speaking and exchanges. This dynamic of three – pupils, teachers, mediators – makes it possible to live a truly interactive moment, even at a distance.

Your catalogue of workshops covers a variety of areas. How do you identify the most relevant and requested topics by the teaching staff?

At the launch of the project, we carried out important monitoring work on the relevant themes to be addressed over several years. We questioned teachers and studied not only the school curricula, but also the major issues and priorities of the educational world. Then, we crossed this resource with the challenges of scientific culture, integrating the major topics of current scientific society.

This work enabled an editorial and strategic committee – bringing together the four science centres and Education Nationale – to draw up a list of key topics for Sciences.live.

Today, every 3 months or so, we prioritise the next creations in the steering committee. But we have given ourselves the opportunity to respond to new opportunities or requests from the teaching staff to keep up with current events or emerging needs. Our agile method and constant creative process allow us to be as close as possible to teachers’ concerns while surprising them!

The issue of cost is central to institutions. How is Sciences.live funded and what are the access conditions for schools?

We have chosen a simple and accessible model: each workshop is offered at a price of €100 for a class (up to 35 students). A single, affordable fare at no additional cost linked to travel, wherever the school is located.

All the workshops are eligible for the Culture Pass for colleges and high schools, which allows the teaching teams to plan and finance these activities under the EAC.

To facilitate the discovery of the device, we have a few sessions pre-financed by our historical partner, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, for establishments in this territory. Aware that the budget can remain a brake for some schools, we regularly develop partnerships with public and private actors to offer punctual supported sessions, so that Sciences.live benefits as many people as possible.

→ For a full presentation of the platform, see the article I have just dedicated to it -) Sciences.live: Live scientific mediation in your classroom

“Sciences.live is a service of general interest, designed to offer all students the same opportunities to discover, understand and practice science.” How can a scientific mediator be brought into a school?

[23
9302
post-15097","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sciences","tag-interviews
["GET
