A student goes looking for information about the French Revolution, clicks on one link, then on another, and twenty minutes later reads everything that exists about the ornithorynque. In documentary research, we call it getting lost. Someone had the idea to make it a game.

WikiMasters turns every French Wikipedia article into a collectible card. We open packages, we complete our album, we exchange duplicates and we compete on quizzes from the articles. I loved the idea at first glance. Then I read the terms of use, and I might as well say it right away: The game is for adults only. It will first be of interest to curious teachers and documentalists, adult trainers, and anyone who wants to get the mechanics back for their class.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What is WikiMasters, in concrete terms?

Rules of the game that say a lot about Wikipedia

Can you use WikiMasters with your students?

How much does WikiMasters cost? Launched in March 2026 by a Quebec developer, it exploded in early September thanks to ZEvent streamers, as told Next.

The principle is based on a few lines:

Packages to open : a five-card booster every ten minutes, with a stock of up to ten packs if you're away.

An album to complete, with tags, favorites and "showcases" to display a thematic collection.

Duels against your friends, in the form of MCQs built from the content of the articles in play.

Exchanges and auctions between players, settled in a virtual currency, the wikibidou.

Guilds, messaging and ranking, as in any online game.

Each card refers to the article from which it is taken and mentions the free license of Wikipedia (CC BY-SA). On the homepage, the examples set the tone: Cat and origami are common cards, Ada Lovelace a rare, the pyramid of Cheops a legendary. I smiled when I saw the owl classified as ‘uncommon’ (I would have bet on the opposite, but let’s move on).

Rules of the game that say a lot about Wikipedia

This is where I really hung on. The statistics of a map do not fall from the sky. Scarcity depends on the number of readers of the article. For the rest, the length of the text gives the attack and its quality gives the defence. A card can therefore change its value with current events: a joint article in August becomes legendary in September if it sees a spike in consultations.

Without looking for it, the game raises a question that documentary teachers are familiar with. Is a widely read article a good article? Not necessarily, and many students think otherwise. Seeing this mismatch translated into attack and defence points makes it almost palpable. (To dig into the subject, this kit to use Wikipedia in class remains a good basis.)

Can you use WikiMasters with your students?

No, no. And it’s written in black and white.

To create an account, you must tick a box confirming that you are at least 18 years old, and the terms of use provide for the deletion of minors’ accounts. The reason given is understandable: Wikipedia deals with everything, including sensitive topics. Add private messaging between players, a market and auctions, and you get an environment you don’t want to see frequented by middle school students.

With major students (BTS, university, adult education), we can talk about it. However, I would not have them create an account for the following data and business model reasons.

For the youngest who like to get lost in an encyclopedia, Vikidia, designed for 8 to 13 year olds, remains the natural gateway.

How much does WikiMasters cost? The economic model, on the other hand, is that of "free-to-play" games. According to Next, a Pro subscription at C$9.99 per month (around €6.50) increases the frequency of packets, the rarity of cards drawn and the number of duels and bids possible each day. The virtual currency is also purchased at C$4.99 per 2 500 wikibidous. Purchases are firm and non-refundable, specify the conditions.

Open packages at random, hoping for a rare card, with the possibility of paying to speed up: We see the mechanics. For the rarity, it notes the number of consultations, visible in the information of the page on Wikipedia. A real work of reading and reformulation, disguised as a game. Dys or allophone students can start from Vikidia articles, shorter and simpler.

Replace attack points with questions

In WikiMasters, the duel is based on MCQs taken from the article. In the classroom, students write three questions on the back of their cards before facing each other in pairs. To write a good question, you have to understand the text, and all the interest is there.

Opening a debate on the value of free knowledge

With high school students, play can become an object of study without being played. Can a company make money from the volunteer work of Wikipedia contributors? The CC BY-SA licence allows this, and Wikimédia France has stated that it is open in principle, without having studied this specific case.
