At last? say the wicked languages \u2026 This passage from the French Academy\u2019s dictionary to the internet is in any case a real success.<\/strong> The Academy\u2019s new digital portal is aimed at the general public and language lovers. It already gives access to the 9e<\/sup>\u00a0edition (in the process of completion) and 8e<\/sup>\u00a0edition of the dictionary. The seven previous editions will be added by the end of the year.\u00a0For the first time, the public will have access to the entire lexicographical undertaking conducted by the Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise since 1694.<\/p>\n

The French Academy has often been criticised for the slowness with which it drew up its famous dictionary. The first volume of the ninth edition of the dictionary was published in 1982, the academicians were in the letter \u2018s\u2019 a little more than a year ago \u2026<\/p>\n

We can make fun of their \u2018relative\u2019 slowness, but we can no longer say that they do not live with their time.<\/strong>. The Academy\u2019s digital portal, which has just been inaugurated, is a great surprise. It offers a simple and responsive interface, with a clear and neat graphic design. Ergonomics and user experience without real flaws. The French Academy\u2019s dictionary website can be consulted on a computer. It is compatible with smartphone or tablet mobile devices.<\/p>\n

The Academy\u2019s online dictionary will offer all nine existing editions<\/h2>\n
For this inauguration, you have access to the text of the 9e<\/sup>\u00a0edition, for the time being available up to the letter S. The visitor also has access to the whole of the 8e<\/sup>\u00a0edition. For each entry, it is also possible to compare the definition of the two versions with one click. Eventually by the end of the year all other editions of the Dictionary will be available online. 325 years after its first paper edition, all content will be available online for free by all, at any time, from anywhere.<\/div>\n

The interface is very simple to tame. The search term is entered in the input field and the dictionary definition is displayed immediately at lightning speed. The tool also displays in a small list the terms that are approaching or have a close spelling. If it is a verb, the dictionary also displays a full conjugation table.<\/div>\n

A dictionary open to other types of content<\/h2>\n
The online dictionary of the Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise offers and is a first gateway to other content with links to the database\u00a0FranceTerme<\/i>, which lists the scientific and technical words officially recommended as part of the enrichment scheme for the French language, or towards the\u00a0Panfrancophone lexicographic database (B.D.L.P.)<\/i>, bringing together lexical varieties from twenty countries of the Francophonie.<\/div>\n
