This can be done in a school setting to prevent students from going astray on prohibited sites. But it can also be useful to gain productivity and concentration by avoiding or limiting zapping on the net. The Chrome browser offers several extensions that simply block access to certain websites temporarily or more strictly. Here is a selection of three.

1 – Nanny for Google Chrome offers a very complete solution for restrict access to certain sites. There are many options. You will be able to configure in a rather fine way the blocking to certain sites. Just add in the extension options the list of URLs of the sites you want to block. You can specify the time you want them to stay blocked or the days of the week when the sites will be inaccessible. Nanny also offers the possibility no not to block access, but to limit consultation time some URLs. It aims to allow you to stay focused on your work. A productivity tool that will therefore try to limit the time spent on time-consuming sites such as Facebook for example. StayFocus allows you to specify the time you will be able to spend on this or that site. You can also specify if you wish on days of the week when its limitations will be valid. StayFocused offers a "Nuclear" option! which will completely block n site without time limits. This last extension is the only one of this to offer a password clamping. You can choose between a blacklist of sites and URLs that you want to restrict access to or a whitelist of only accessible sites. Once all the options are configured and a password is chosen, you will need to authenticate with it to change your configuration. The aim is different.
