Typography is the essential basis of any graphic creation. The art of the letter remains one of the fundamentals of any graphic arts education.
Here are three free interactive sites which make it possible to propose an awareness of typo. They are all in English but nevertheless remarkable. In order not to spoil anything, all three wield humour to several degrees. There is nothing better than learning while having fun.
I shot of serif*.
Here is a little online game to have fun with the so-called serif fonts. In other words, fonts with wheelbases. In typography, the wheelbases are the small extensions that form the ending of characters in certain fonts. This little online game will train your visual acuity and your ability to detect serif fonts. I shot de serif* offers you a game where you will have to shoot the serif and not the non serif 🙂
Funny and pedagogical. Link: I shot of serif*
TypeConnection.
This second site is a real dating club for …character fonts. The aim here is to play with typographic assemblages. Which typo goes best with another. Not as simple as it sounds. Character combination is an alchemy that is not so easy to master. TypeConnection introduces you to nice couples and offers the possibility to overlay two different typographies on the screen. Rich and informative. Link: TypeConnection
KernType.
This third site is my favorite. Kerntype allows you to play with another of the essential rules of typography: spacings between characters otherwise referred to as the approach. The website displays words with different typos on the screen. The spacing between the letters has shifted. It is up to you to try to find the right ‘approach’ by moving the letters with your mouse. Once done, you will be able to visually compare your proposal with the recommended one. Link: KernType
