Face Privacy. A small well thought out tool to blur photos easily

Last updated on 17 June 2025

Share school photos with ease, without worrying about problems related to the right to the image? This is possible with Face Privacy. This small tool, simple and free, was designed by Ulrich Picaud, a Grenoble teacher, to help his colleagues (and not only) to publish photos in compliance with the rules.

Privacy Face App

What is Face Privacy?

Free software (you can even take a look at the code if it tells you) that Automatically blurs faces in a photo, or replace them with funny emojis, just to keep a little fantasy. The tool also allows you to change the resolution of the image.

Why is it useful?

Because publishing pictures of students without parental consent is prohibited. And frankly, between the steps, the authorizations, and the risks, it is better not to play with this. There, everything becomes simpler.

What makes Face Privacy super practical is thatit does not require any technical expertise. You do not need to be a graphic designer or an expert in editing. Basically, it works as follows:

✔ We send the photo
✔ The app sees faces on its own
✔ You choose what you want to blur or hide
✔ You can use a classic blur or stick an emoji instead
✔ Adjust image size if necessary
✔ And hop, we download the modified version

There are even a few nice adjustments: the size of the brush, the eraser, the choice of … emojis, enough to customize a little.

🔒 And confidentiality in all this?

On this, Face Privacy is in the nails. Everything happens directly on your device: no photos come out of your computer or tablet. No server, no cloud, no transfer.

Blurring is done through an integrated system, and everything stays between you and your machine. Result: your data does not move, and you are quiet GDPR question.

And as it is a free project present on the Forge of Educational Digital Commons, you can even contribute, suggest ideas, or report a concern here: https://forge.apps.education.fr/faceprivacy/app/-/issues
