Jigsaw Planet is a small online service that allows create online puzzles very easily at from any image or photo.
In summary: you load an image, you choose the number of pieces, and the puzzle is playable immediately in the browser, without installation and without mandatory account.
A nice little utility for children aged 7 to 77 😉 which makes it possible to no longer have to juggle with the small pieces of cardboard puzzle. Here nothing goes astray, everything is on the screen and you will no longer have to fight to finally have a magnificent image of a horrible flowerpot.
With Jigsaw Planet, you choose the image to be reconstructed. All you have to do is upload it so that Jigsaw Planet immediately offers you to recreate it on the screen in as many pieces as you want. And if your photos do not inspire you you can always fall back on the puzzles created by other users of the site. There are hundreds of them.
You can create a puzzle and play without needing to register. But in this case you will lose your game if you do not finish your puzzle at once. By registering for free you will be able to save your progress and all your puzzles in a personal account.
You keep your hand on the difficulty, even during the game. The service now allows you to cut an image of 4 to 300 pieces. You can also change the shape of the pieces, activate their random rotation to seriously corrode the exercise, display the original image at the bottom of the game table, sort the pieces or leave them in piles.
To create a correct puzzle, provide a clear image of at least 1280 x 960 pixels. Underneath, the cutting quickly becomes illegible.
What to spend minutes or long hours fighting with the small virtual pieces to reconstitute an image of your last vacation or the photo of the grandmother.
Jigsaw Planet is free. The service is funded by advertising and will ask you to disable your ad blocker. In a classroom position, it is better to know this before starting the activity in front of the students.
Using Jigsaw Planet in class
Three details change everything for school use, and they are rather well hidden in the site’s help.
You can integrate a puzzle into your ENT or class blog. Each public puzzle has an integration code. Students play without leaving your space, without going through the gallery of the site.
You can set the puzzle directly in the address. By adding parameters to the URL of the game page, you set the number of coins, their shape and rotation. The most useful is called savegame=0 : prevents the loading of an unfinished part. The publisher itself recommends this when several students share the same computer. Without this setting, the second student recovers the half-finished puzzle from the first.
An idea of activity: a work of art in 24 pieces to show a composition, a map to locate the regions, a school trip photo to tell the story. The puzzle is just a pretext for observation, and it is very good like that.
What I like less
The public gallery is not filtered upstream. Puzzles are dropped by users and moderated afterwards. Going through the Explore section, you quickly come across images that have nothing to do in front of a class. Prepare your puzzles in advance and give the direct link rather than sending the students to search the catalogue.
Beware of student photos. A puzzle created in public is visible and playable by everyone. If you use images of your students, the private album is mandatory, not optional. The publisher itself recommends the private album for personal photos.
Finally, we remain on a Czech service hosted outside school, without teaching space or classroom management. For a one-off activity, it is perfect. For regular use with student accounts, look elsewhere.
