The best tool to create captures of your screen

Last updated on 12 May 2026

Which tool to use to create screenshots and images of your computer screen or small videos to show a manipulation to your students? There are a lot of software that will make it easier for you, but few of them stand out for their ergonomics, flexibility or ease of use. I selected two, one for Mac and one for PC, which I think are among the best.

Capto

Capto

Capto only works on Mac and that is a shame, because This is the best I have seen when it comes to a toolkit for taking pictures or videos of screenshots. The options offered by Capto are too numerous to be detailed here. It makes it very easy to create captures of some or all of your screen. You can generate still images, but also complete videos.

Capto allows you to edit your images by adding arrows, texts, URLs, etc., but it also allows and is much more original to edit your videos with an integrated editing studio that is very easy to handle. This new software also offers a layout studio that will allow you to create documents and other polycopies integrating your different screenshots very simply for an impeccable end result.

A real favorite for a software that will quickly become essential to you for tutorials, course preparation or for the reverse class. Capto costs around €20, but the creators offer a free license to teachers. I have not been able to verify this for the time being, you will tell me.

Screen Recorder

Screen Recorder

If you do not have a Mac, Screen Recorder is the equivalent of Capto for Windows users. I have to admit that I am less comfortable on Windows, so do not hesitate to mention other tools in the comments.

Screen Recorder brings together pretty much the same functions as Capto with even simpler controls. Screen recorder allows you to take photos of all or part of your screen as well as capture videos. In both cases, you will be able to edit and comment on your captures.

Unlike Capto no layout studio to create documents with your screenshots, but Screen Recorder offers a system for classifying your images that will allow you to find everything easily when you use an external tool. Screen Recorder is free in its basic functions, but video recording time will be limited. For the full version, you will have to pay 30 euros.

I use ‘super screenshot’ or ‘amazing screenshot’. It is practical and effective. The annotation of the screenshots is a bit sketchy, but it meets most of the needs.
