A family arrives during the year. The parents speak Ukrainian, some English, not French at all. You have at hand the school’s welcome booklet, 25 well-patterned PDF pages. Copy and paste it page by page in a translator, you know the result: a porridge of text without titles, and an evening passes there.
In short, this is exactly the chore that promises to be swallowed BookTranslator, an online service that translates with AI an entire book or document (PDF, EPUB, Word file) while maintaining its layout. It is mainly aimed at teachers, documentalists, researchers or trainers who have a long document to pass from one language to another. Not the students, we'll see why.

What exactly is BookTranslator?
The principle consists of three actions: you upload a file, you choose the target language, you retrieve the translated version. The site advertises 52 accepted formats (PDF, EPUB, DOCX, TXT, MOBI, subtitles, images, mangas …) and files up to 300 MB.
The difference with a general translator is the scale. The tool works on the complete document, with an automatic glossary so that a proper name or technical term keeps the same translation from one end to the other. It passes the scanned PDFs to the OCR and replaces the translated text in the original mock-up, including tables and images. You can also download a bilingual, original version and translation side by side.
On the language side, the figures vary according to the page consulted: 168 languages here, ‘more than 100’ there, and 85 languages actually used by customers (the most honest statistic in the lot, by the way, and I find it rather nice that they display it). The site also promises to translate a 400-page pavement before your coffee cools down. I did not time, and seeing the coffee shop in the teachers’ room, the comparison does not prove much:)).
Finally, beware of homonyms: several services have an almost identical name (booktranslator.ai, BookTransla, an Android … app). This article is only about booktranslator.app.

Welcoming allophone families
In my view, this is the most useful use. Welcome booklet, rules of procedure, note for a school trip: these documents belong to your institution, the issue of rights does not arise, and the retained layout gives a presentable result. The bilingual version also allows an interpreter or parent who speaks the language to quickly check the translation.
Propose a text in bilingual version
For an allophone student in UPE2A or for a living language class, a bilingual edition changes the reading of a long text: we advance in the language studied and we take a look next to it when we block. For example, an English teacher can prepare a news story from the public domain, retrieved from the Project Gutenberg, in English-French version. Associated with a tool that reads the text aloud as DocsToAudio, it also opens up a lead for a dys student who needs to hear what he or she is reading.

Many educational science books and research articles exist only in English. For your own training, the tool allows you to read an entire chapter, including notes. Attention to the legal framework, I will return to it below.
Recover an old scanned document
Documentalists, this point concerns you: The integrated OCR reads PDFs consisting only of images. A brochure from a partner institution abroad, an article photocopied and then scanned sideways. I did not see what this OCR gives on a poor quality scan, and this is typically the case where I would start with a small file.
How much does BookTranslator cost? The ‘free of charge’, which is not entirely one of them
This is where it gets complicated, I spent a little time in the rates page and the price calculator, and you have to read each line. Three formulas coexist.
- Guest, no account : payment by task. Count €3.48 for a document of less than 30,000 words, then the price rises in steps (€6.96 for a text of 50,000 to 100,000 words). The history is deleted after 7 days.
- Free, with account: 0 € per month, but no credit included. To translate, you have to buy a pack, the smallest costing €18 for 50 000 credits, or around 10 books of 50 000 words according to their estimate. Credits purchased do not expire.
- Pro : a subscription with generous monthly credits, billed at Eur 89.
There is no free trial, only a limited preview before purchase, and not for all files. The exact price is displayed before payment and the service announces a money-back guarantee.

On the practical side, the interface exists in French and everything happens in the browser, without installation. I did not try it on a tablet.
Data and copyright: to check before filing a file
BookTranslator is published by Lovin, LLC. Its privacy policy states that the content of your files is sent to external AI providers, which it does not name, to produce the translation, and that your documents are not used to train templates. Storage goes through Cloudflare and Supabase. Nothing, on the other hand, about accommodation in Europe. And the service is not intended for those under 13 years of age.
Clearly, it is a tool for the adult who prepares, not for the classroom.
There remains the question of rights, which the site itself poses: you only submit content that you have the right to translate. Your documents, texts in the public domain or under free license, no worries. The novel purchased in EPUB that you would like to distribute translated to your students is another story.

A first draft for large documents, not an official translation
I especially see BookTranslator as a troubleshooting tool for long documents, those in front of which we give up because of lack of time. AI provides a first version, including a mock-up, and that is already huge. The website itself recommends proofreading for any professional use: As soon as possible, have someone who speaks the language check it.
