Viaeduc. The professional social network for all teachers

Viaeduc is a professional social network open to all teachers French and beyond to all education professionals. The service was presented this week at the ORME meetings, organised each year by the Canopé universitaire de Marseille.

Viaeduc is good news. We can only welcome the birth of a social network of reference that promotes dialogue and the relationship between teachers. A pro social network that also showcases the collective intelligence of an entire profession. This was sorely lacking in a community dispersed in a multitude of sites, blogs, forums and networks not always adapted.

On paper it even seems ideal, we will see in a few months what the community of teachers will do concretely. Like other social networks , everything will depend on the adoption of the tool by users and the use they will make of it, but it has everything to succeed.

It clearly responds to a need for pooling, collaboration and cross-cutting exchanges between teachers across all disciplines. , levels or academies of each other.
It should be noted that Viaeduc is independent from the Ministry of Education. This point is of course essential, it is not the official intranet of the Ministry, Viaeduc is an independent network led by a public interest group that involves public partners (the Canopé network, the CNED National Centre for Distance Learning, the University of Poitiers) but private partners with, for example, Les éditions Belin….

The site guarantees the security and absolute confidentiality of the exchanges. Another point but it is important, only teachers have access to the network. You'll be with colleagues. To register for Viaeduc, you have to show your white leg and draw your academic email address. Please note that you will then be able to change it and use your private email address. A good idea.

If you have already used a social network such as Facebook, you will not be disoriented by the interface and basic functions of Viaeduc. If this is your first step, you can start with confidence. The network is private and professional, no consumer search engine will reference what you are going to do or say. The ergonomics of the network are neat. It is the result of a life-size test with hundreds of teachers over the past several months who have evolved, interface, functions, etc.

Once registered, it only takes a few seconds, you can go in your preferences to fill in your personal business card. This is where you can change your email address and personalise the privacy rules of your messages and the notification system offered by Viaeduc. The network will send you an email according to your settings to notify you of the various events related to your account. I strongly advise you to spend some time refining these settings.

The homepage informs you at a glance about the news of your network of relations Viaeduc and a comprehensive dashboard that makes it easier for you to navigate the network. You also have access to a group service and a powerful search engine but we will come back to it.

As in a traditional social network, Viaeduc operates on a system of relationships or friends with whom you will be able to communicate or exchange freely. You invite colleagues you know or professionals who seem interesting to you. Everyone is always free to accept or not a relationship invitation.  Viaeduc also makes it possible to create groups on any topic for exchanges with others. These groups may be public and open, or closed and reserved for members admitted by the creator(s) of the group. You can post messages, attach documents or files, comment on other people's messages, vote for a particular message. It is not very far from a Google+-type network. Google Less 😉

The other important function of Viaeduc is the possibility to publish educational resources. Again, you are free to make your resource public or to restrict access to it to other members of the network. Creating a resource in itself is very simple, and you will be accompanied step by step. Title, description, text, image and possibly link or file attached. Simple. The posts will be linked to your profile, so your relationships will be able to view them from your business card and you will of course be able to do the same in return.

Among the many functions of Viaeduc we still have to talk about its search engine. This is one of the major strengths of the system in order not to get lost in a network that aims to welcome tens of thousands of teachers very quickly. This central search engine makes it possible to search all the resources on Viaeduc. Both a member, a group or an educational resource. Resources created by users but which can also come from private publishers. These latter resources will pay off, but you will benefit from the comments and advice of your colleagues, whether they are laudatory … or not.
Viaeduc's search engine is particularly efficient and swift. A clever filter system allows the results to be fine-tuned from a first query.

Viaeduc is online, I urge you to try it out. The network is of course free. If it still smells a bit of fresh paint and if some shelves are still a little sloppy, it should continue to improve and get richer in the coming months with the arrival of new users. There are more than 7,000 to date. Once registered, you can invite your colleagues directly from your business card.  There is already a nice fresh air and a spirit of dialogue and exchange of experiences and resources.
