RetroNews. Immersed in three centuries of print media

Last updated on 12 May 2026

This article was updated >> here << in May 2018 with the release of a new version of Retronews.

Retronews is a real gift for all history buffs and press lovers. This brand new site created in partnership with the Bibliothèque Nationale de France gives you access to more than three centuries of press archives. It's all happiness.

Retronews

15 million articles and the main titles of the general information press over 3 centuries from 1631 to 1945 from the digitised archives of the BNF. And the collection is expected to grow gradually over time.

You will come across it at the bend of a page the signatures of some famous confreres from Maupassant to Huysmans via Zola, or even Aragon.

Search engine

To help you find your happiness, Retronews offers you a particularly fast and very efficient search engine who will go to search in full text in the contents of all the digitized articles. A whole series of filters, by press title, press type, date, etc., will then allow you to refine the results.

Pub

Retronews also offers one entry per theme. You can also create custom themes yourself. I also liked the Heading the Ones of the day with the first pages of the newspapers at the date of the day, but a few years back. You also have the possibility to search the Ones newspapers on the date of your choice. Practical.

Some of the day

For teachers and students, the real added value of the site lies in any a series of pedagogical files specially produced by a team of teachers in history, geography and art history. More than 50 historical events are proposed at the start, with for each file a press review of the time to relive the events ‘as if you were there’. The list of cases again is expected to grow gradually over time.

Newspaper articles and pages are available in high definition, making it easy to zoom inside a page. You can download a page or an extract from a page in PDF format, you can print it out or put it away in a personal folder. Ideal for preparing a course or a presentation.

Only black spot the obligation to register on the site to be able to view the articles. The premium version of the site is also paid. It will make it possible to use advanced search functions and to embed, for example, an extract from a newspaper page or an article on a website or blog. Dear, I don't know. I was told that the Specific pricing policy for the world of education was currently under discussion with key stakeholders. So let's wait and see.

But don’t wait to explore and use RetroNews, for the launch it’s completely free throughout April.
