RebusOmatic. A machine to make rebuses

Last updated on 12 May 2026

RebusOmatic is a pretty amazing little site that allows to automatically generate rebuses from any sentence. Thanks to Émilie, a reader of ToolsTice who gave it to me by email.

RebusOmatic

Rebusomatic is very simple to understand and use. You do not need to register. Just go to the homepage of the site and write in the field provided for this purpose the sentence you want to convert into rebus.

A click further on, you will see a beautiful rebus. All you have to do is download and print it. Behind this apparent simplicity is a real titanic work carried out by the designer of the site. To produce a satisfactory result Rebus-o-matic must "phonetize" the text you are going to type. It must, whatever your sentence, turn it into a series of phonetic signs before it can find associated images.

Clear, but not simple. The phonetization of the French poses great difficulties. How, for example, can a machine be made to understand that the word ‘convent’ is not pronounced in the same way, depending on whether it is the verb conjugated to the present or a noun?

In icing on the cake, RebusOMatic offers a guessing function. A theme is chosen: Proverbs, Movie Titles, Song Titles, Famous Characters and the site immediately generates a riddle. If you do not find the solution, you will be able to give your language to the chat with one click.

Friendly and free for your own use. The advertising a little too present will make it more difficult to make it available to students even if the site offers a rather clever button that allows to make it disappear.
