I am not a data: Learn to control your personal data

Last updated on 27 January 2023

How to get your hands on your data? The association UFC Que Choisir has just launched an awareness-raising campaign on the problem of personal data that we collect from all corners of the web during our digital life.

“I am not a data”, states in a powerful way this communication campaign of the consumer association UFC Que Choisir which offers you to “take back” the data held by the major operators of the web.

I am not a UFC data portal

The association has set up a particularly well-designed site for the occasion, which can serve as a quality educational resource and be useful for all citizens. A flawless one that should be welcomed.

Discover what web giants know about you

We suspect this, but we do not measure the amount of data we sow on the web. Google alone concentrates a lot of data. Some time ago, I proposed to you a tool to explore the data kept by the Californian giant. I was the first one surprised.

“I am not a data” goes much further and is interested in many services such as Instagram, TikTok, Uber or Netflix …

The portal offers two main options:

How to get your personal data from net companies

This is one of the first functions of this portal and this file alone deserves that you keep the UFC website in memory somewhere.

Pub

This is a real guide, a very well explained methodology to ask the different web services to retrieve a copy of the data they have in their possession. This is our right, but it is often very difficult to find the information on the sites. Moreover, the procedures are not identical from one provider to another, it would be too simple.

The UFC website will guide you gradually. Above all, the association has found a useful link for each service to request a copy of your data.

Analyze the data in the possession of the web giants for an awareness

The other great function is also useful because it is pedagogical. What do web giants know about you? More than you think. And the UFC Que Choisir proves it for you.

Once you have retrieved your data from the various providers, the UFC website offers you a quick analysis of your archive. Expect surprises.

Ideal for a demonstration to young people. Note that the UFC had the good idea to make available sample type archives to be able to test the tool without the need to use its own data.

To try with Netflix, Tinder or Uber and of course with the main social networks, real data vacuums.

Exercise your rights to obtain and possibly, your personal data

Logically, after helping you retrieve your data and then analyse it, the Consumers’ Association website had to help you exercise your rights.

The site " I'm not a data ’ integrates a message sending system with efficient letter templates to contact the interlocutors of the companies concerned. You can ask them to provide you with a copy of all the data in their possession about you, or even to delete them completely from their tablets. Useful and effective.

In the end “I am not a data” is a free site of public utility in the proper and noble sense of the term. To slip without hesitation in your favorites.
