To the ladies' delight. Online enriched edition of Zola’s work

Last updated on 11 November 2017

To the happiness of the ladies, enriched edition is a real gift for all lovers of Zola and literature. This application available on the web and soon on tablet allows to discover or rediscover Émile Zola’s major work in a multimedia edition using a playful, but also scientific approach of irreproachable quality.

To the Happiness of the Ladies

Thanks to the BNF, the Musée d’Orsay and Orange for this co-production, which makes it possible to appreciate all that well-thought-out multimedia can bring to the valorisation and discovery or rediscovery of an ancient work.

This enriched edition of Zola’s novel offers two entries or two parts that invite you to immerse yourself in the novel itself, but also in the 19th-century society that serves as a backdrop to the history of the Rougon-Macquarts: Read and Explore

The authors first invite you to read the text. A complete version to browse online. By hovering your mouse over the text, you will discover an augmented reading mode that enriches the document with a multitude of notes and definitions. Many illustrations from the BNF collections are also available. In this first part dedicated to the text, you will also have access to long excerpts read by the comedian Lambert Wilson.

The most moving thing, however, is the possibility of accessing Zola’s manuscript. You can even choose a reading mode that puts the written pages of Zola's hand next to the text. Surprising.

Selected handwritten sheets of Zola's preparatory file are also available. Notes and drafts made upstream offer an exciting vision of the great writer's working methods.

The version enriched with the happiness of the ladies offers in a second part ‘Explore’ a beautiful infographic that invites you to dive into the novel and the time through eight themes approached with texts, interviews and a careful iconographic choice.

In the end, a magnificent script that strips away Zola’s work and lends itself to many uses in the classroom.

We are waiting for the announced version for iPad and Android tablet, but we can already dive into the open and free web version on the website of the BNF. An opportunity to recall that the Bibliothèque Nationale de France offers an excellent resource site for teachers to discover here.

Very impressive this work. Not easy to find all the same from the site of the BNF which remains a little tufted. Thank you for the direct link I gave to all my grandchildren and my reading friends.
I had already liked the work on Candide (which you can have on a tablet) but here it is even richer.
Your site is of great use to me because I am in an association which of course is always looking for …si tools that are free of charge. Many thanks for your work.
