Braille Font. Braille text generator

Last updated on 7 June 2018

Braille Font is a typeface that allows text to be written in Braille. "Font Even" site specializing in typography offers a free Braille text generator. An interesting resource to offer exercises and games to your students to play with letters, coded messages and talk about disability.

As you know, Braille is a tactile writing system with salient points. It is used by people who are blind or highly visually impaired. It was invented by the Frenchman Louis Braille (1809-1852) who had lost his sight as a result of an accident. Inspired by a military code used by soldiers to communicate at night without light, he invented the non-linear writing system. In the Braille system, each letter consists of six positions of dots arranged in two columns of three dots each.

You will find on the website Font Even an alphabet to learn letters and numbers in Braille.

The site also offers a Braille text translator generator. You write a short text in the website window. You can then choose the size of the Braille font, then the color of it. Font Even then offers you after generating your Braille text to create an image that you can save to your computer or print. You can then use it in the creation of a poster, for example. The site also offers a code to insert Braille text on a site or blog.

Once printed on paper, if you want to offer a sensory game to your students to allow them to recognize the letters with their fingers, it will be enough for example to put a glue point on each point of each letter and thus give it a relief.

It is not easy, but the experience is both exciting and particularly instructive on many aspects.

If you start, be aware that the first ten letters of the Braille alphabet also represent 10 digits. To find yourself there, there is a special symbol called "Number Follows", which always precedes a symbol that indicates a number. In the same way, another symbol called "Capital letter" indicates that the next letter is capitalized.

Ps: Attention this font can be used to raise awareness but not for professional use. A reader, thank you Ludo (@garconvacher on Twitter), points out to me that this is American Braille. I searched but could not find a converter for French Braille. For specialists: the page dedicated to unicode braille on Wikipedia.
