Sondo. A digital library for inclusive school

Sondo is a great project carried out by a team of enthusiasts of the company Mobidys in Nantes. They created an innovative digital library for Dys students in schools but beyond to all students with reading difficulties.

I already said here more than a year ago at the start of Sondo all the good I thought of this experience. Two years after the project grew well. Sondo is opening up to high schools, particularly vocational high schools. Mobidys also declined its offer for elementary school with Sondido.

This is good news, especially as the use of Sondo really changes children's lives. This is shown by an impact study of pupils, teachers and parents.

Sondo, school books and textbooks for troubled young readers

How can we restore confidence in young people suffering from dys disorders? How to help them regain the pleasure of reading? It is to these formidable challenges that the platform responds. Sondo de Mobidys.

The Sondo Digital Library an audio version of textbooks. They are complementary to paper manuals. Their use in headphones is intended to compensate for learning difficulties, by allowing the student to navigate and understand the content more quickly.

The Sondo catalogue also offers Literature books in FROG digital format. A format developed by Mobidys with teachers, speech therapists and researchers that offers a range of integrated reading tools that will allow each child to choose the solution that best suits them. Change of font, colouring of syllables or phonemes, increasing the space between words, punctual audio support or audio reading of the entire book with a greyed-out that takes place gradually, …Génial definitions.

All students in a Sondo-subscribed class have access to all books at school or at home. The Sondo catalogue now counts more than 400 titles related to the programs.

Sondo, what does it change every day for children?

Sondo moved to many schools after a long period of testing in many colleges and then in elementary schools with Sondido. A baptism of fire in the middle of the Covid crisis. At the time of the reviews, the Mobidys team commissioned an impact study to better measure the concrete results of the use of Sondo and thus refine its offer.

More than 100 young readers responded to the survey. The results are very positive. “I am less tired” “I understand better” “…a feeling of success …” Three valuable verbatims that show that these digital versions made by Sondo reduce fatigue (a well-known problem for Dys children who have to concentrate to decipher texts). They contribute to understanding and a sense of success and thus facilitate inclusion.

By the way, the survey shows through the responses collected from parents that they too have seen their daily lives change. Several of them cite the relationship to homework as more serene, less confrontational, less stressful. As for teachers, they favor the Frog format for literary works. “Before Sondo I only offered excerpts from works”.
