Core. The world's largest collection of open access research papers

Last updated on 12 May 2026

There are sites that we have never finished to go around as the resources available on their pages are vast. This is the case for encyclopaedias and a few large documentary sites. core that just made me discover a reader of the Tice Tools Letter, from this point of view, is a champion of all categories.

An incredible online library with infinite shelving dedicated to publications and research papers, open to all. More than 200 million publications in all languages available online. A real gold mine to slip somewhere in your favorites.

An excellent search engine for researchers and students

Core comes in the form of a search engine. A bit like Google Scholar and a few others bibliographic search engines. To take full measure of Core’s power, simply run an online search on any topic that comes through your head or interests you.

Within seconds, Core shows you a copious list of results. Journal articles, theses, reports publications … A second click gives you access to the presentation of the resource. A complete identity card with origin, source, author, year, summary. One more click and you can view the entire document online. You can also download it in PDF format most of the time.

All open data in open access on the Web.

Core collects research papers from data providers around the world, including institutional and thematic repositories, open access and hybrid journal publishers. CORE currently contains 209,949,331 open access articles, from thousands and more than tens of thousands of journals, collected from 13,798 data providers worldwide.

The amount of data thus made available to all is just huge. Don't look, Core offers the world's largest collection of open access full text, making it an unparalleled search tool. It contains more than 45 terabytes (TB) of textual data.

The platform that is part of the “The Open University” project in England offers advanced search features that will help you find your happiness in this gigantic digital shed dedicated to research and knowledge. The first search is done by default in full text. You can then apply filters to reduce and refine the results, by language, source, seniority, author, etc.

CORE’s mission is to bring together all open access research around the world and provide unlimited access for all.

core is offered in a somewhat austere English interface but make no mistake, it is indeed a small treasure. Free and free.

This database is much less rich than Google Scholar (sorry for the Gafam contemptors): I entered the word “Hospitableness” in Core: 392 results. In Google Scholar: 1,500. It is true that it is better than Isidore (22), Base (118), Jurn (64). As for OAlster, it announces 667,000 results. But I have doubts!

[…] Base already featured on Tice Tools is arguably one of the best if not the best search engine for academic publications. The basic index is gigantic. No less than 272 million documents from around 9000 trusted sources. This notion of “sources of trust” is decisive. The content providers included in the search engine were selected manually (by people from the BASE team) and reviewed one by one. That makes a hell of a difference. Base allows for efficient and targeted searches and academically relevant results.Similar in positioning, you can also look at Core as another open-access database of research papers. […]
