Museo. Search engine for images of works of art in the public domain

Last updated on 7 May 2021

Museo is another online resource that allows you to share through the web the wealth that can be found in the galleries or reserves of major museums. This is a great search engine to index images of works in the public domain disseminated in Open Content by major museum institutions and foundations and institutions around the world.

Museo

Thousands of freely usable works for your courses, presentations or presentations. We are at the beginning of the adventure, but Museo already brings together the resources of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Rijksmuseum, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Harvard Art Museums and the New York Public Library Digital Collection. Good people for the first steps of this project that will evolve in the coming months.

An open content image search engine

More and more museums are choosing an Open Content strategy for reproductions of the works they host. This is the case, for example. the Museums of the City of Paris which we were talking about here a few weeks ago. A work in open content, is a work whose dissemination and modification are free. These images can thus be used as you see fit on a site, a blog, a course support …

In other words, every image you will find on Museo is in the public domain and totally free. However, it is recommended to credit the source institution. That is the least of all things.

Pub

Thousands of images of works of art in a search engine stripped to the extreme

Museo is simple. It’s not much to say. A little too simple even and we hope to see him endowed with some functions that will help research. For this launch Museo offers only a keyword search system. It works mainly in English, but I did some tests in French with the relevant results. Museo is of course missing to grow an advanced search mode. With at least the possibility of filtering the results by author, period, museum ….or even color as proposed by the giant Google Arts.

Search results for Paris:

Artworks _dart _libres

The results are displayed in a few seconds on Museo in the form of large thumbnails. Clicking on a thumbnail will take you directly to the page of the work on the site of the original collection or museum.

A great free resource that we hope to see grow and enrich.
